Ritsumeikan University Graduate School of International Relations Business Management Training Course (January 2022)

This training course was conducted to allow students taking “Professional Training” under Ritsumeikan University Graduate School of International Relations Doctor’s Program to learn about Japanese corporate management methods and practical business management (manufacturing, accounting and finance, human resources and labor) and to acquire practical knowledge and experience of Japanese companies through opinion-exchange meetings with companies.

Although the participants are categorized as students in Japan, they work in the government agencies and the private sector in their home countries and are passionate about the Japanese management style. This training course is an addition to regular research at the university and provide participants with the opportunity to visit and interact directly with Japanese companies in order to learn about management philosophies that characterize Japanese-style management and its sustainable succession, ‘kaizen’ and ‘5S’ at manufacturing sites, strategies for overseas expansion, and so on. The aim is to provide a point of reference for future research and in their work after returning home.

The training course was conducted fully on Zoom due to the spread of COVID-19. It was a pity that participants were unable to visit the companies in person as the course was conducted online. However, the training was very productive, with heated discussions and active questioning both in the lectures and in the wrap-up sessions.
