As someone who has always worked at a large corporation, I feel very excited to see people running small and medium-sized enterprises, where decisions made on individual discretion keep the business going. These people operate their business in a lively manner with their own philosophy and stories. Even companies that appear to flourish or look like they have “made it big” are an accumulation of small and steady efforts and unseen work. These are the things that I would like participants to learn about when they visit small and medium-sized enterprises.

Here, I want to introduce Barcos, a company based in Kurayoshi City, that has been continuously striving to make world-class handbags. Established in Kurayoshi, Tottori Prefecture in 1991, over 20 years it has grown not just domestically but internationally. It now exports its own brand products to department stories in other parts of the world including Asia. One of its focuses is overseas business. Barcos continuously exhibits its products at the world’s largest class handbag exhibition held in Milan, Italy, where the company has received a design award, among others. As such, its design and business-planning abilities are highly recognized.

The president is a distinctive character who has traveled all over the world as a photographer. Participants appreciated how he manages his business aiming for world-class products with a philosophy based on practical, even physical, experiences in his life, instead of academic studies like MBA.
