A role model for many companies through practicing 3S activities
Tanaka tec of Kyoto is a can manufacturing and sheet metal working company in its 74th year of business. It professes its corporate dedication to the aim of being a company that fosters people useful to society. Its aim is not to simply turn a profit; its corporate worth lies in facilitating the achievement of what makes people happy. If a company is unable to produce people who possess a proper sense of values, it in turn is unable to produce merchandise of use to society. Such is the thinking that lies behind the “people-producing” 3S activities the company thoroughly implements and promotes.
All Tanaka tec employees are part of the 3S activities that the company has engaged in for over 25 years, and which are connected to various forms of Kaizen on the factory floor and in the office. The essence of 3S (seiri, seiton, seiso, or “organized, orderly, clean”) is to clearly position it as a way of being conscious of proper thinking, as a person and at all times, and sincerely persevere in it. Tanaka tec is a model of 3S, and, as such, is paid inspection visits by numerous companies in the Kansai region. In November, company executives and consultants from Kazakhstan visited Tanaka tec. They endlessly asked questions about everything from the explanations they received to what they observed on the factory floor. The innovations they learned about at Tanaka tec may well end up being introduced to Kazakhstan.
