A change in PREX’s activities that target Vietnam

PREX’S activities for Vietnam have a long history. We have been continuing our activities with seminars both in Japan and overseas, which started soon after our establishment in 1990. In the ‘90s, our seminars, such as the Economic Administration and Management Course and the “Small and Medium Enterprise Promotion Course were mainly targeted at government officials. But since 2004, we have also been holding management seminars aimed at other participants, such as instructors as well as executives at Vietnamese companies who have attended the business courses and practical business training courses at the Vietnam Japan Human Resources Cooperation Center.

Globalization at Kansai companies and PREX’s activities

When PREX implements seminar activities for human-resource development in emerging countries, it becomes actively engaged in a range of efforts aimed at deepening understanding, via activities that take place at the companies’ worksites. This includes visits to many SMEs, mainly in the Kansai region, lectures by various managers, factory field trips and opinion exchanges with company staff members. Cooperation from all the different companies in the Kansai region is indispensable in PREX’s seminar efforts.

In the meantime, Kansai’s SMEs are beginning to be faced with globalization, in the same way that many Japanese companies have started to tackle globalization and overseas expansion. One of PREX’s founding objectives is to contribute to Kansai’s internationalization by activating human-to-human exchanges through human-resource development in emerging countries. We have been working on human-resource development based on the idea that PREX will be able to play a role in the challenges posed by globalization for Kansai’s SMEs.

Two efforts – The Management Training Program for Vietnamese Staff Working at SMEs in Kansai and a human-resources development project for manufacturing in Dong Nai Province, Vietnam – are aimed at making contributions from the standpoint of providing the kind of human-resource development needed by SMEs aiming to expand into Vietnam.

Links between Kansai and former seminar participants from Vietnam

PREX aims to maintain networks among fellow participants and also between Japan and former seminar participants, who have since returned home, through the establishment of PREX alumni associations. The groups mainly encompass countries with large numbers of seminar participants. Vietnam has its own association with nearly 500 members. Notably, the association is engaged in continuing efforts to implement and cooperate with seminars held in Japan for business people studying at the Vietnam Japan Human Resources Cooperation Center, which is being established in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. The PREX alumni association members are mainly managers and executives at Vietnamese companies.
Sessions for exchanging opinions are held as part of the seminar programs in Japan. The idea is to create a forum where Vietnamese companies (as represented by the seminar participants) and people at Kansai companies can come into contact. It would be wonderful if the exchanges in Japan could later serve as a springboard for creating networks whenever the Kansai business people engage in business activities in Vietnam.
