Malawi Mr. Golden Nyasulu Energy Officer, Department of Energy Affairs, Ministry of Natural Resources, Energy and the Environment |
Mr. Golden, who attended the “JICA Assistance Seminar for Introduction of Solar Power Generation (B)” in 2010, has sent us a report on the introduction in Malawi of that form of energy:
“An 830kW solar-power generation plant has been constructed at the Kamuzu International Airport in the capital of Lilongwe with Japanese assistance. The goal of this project, implemented through the Japanese government’s Cool Earth Partnership Policy, is to reduce global warming by using renewable energy.
Construction began in November 2012 and was completed the following June. Trial operations got under way in August. This is the first trial in Malawi for such a project. You may think that 830kW is small in scale, but this is the first big project for this nation.”
Many countries, not just Malawi, have been implementing JICA projects similar to this one. Furthermore, JICA not only implements the projects but also carries out human-resource development among local people in connection with the projects.
With his learning acquired in Japan and with his passion, Mr. Golden is working on the introduction of renewable energy and local electrification in Malawi.
- The solar-power generation plant (shown in July 2013), which was constructed in Malawi with Japanese assistance
- A local follow-up activity for the “Assistance Seminar for Introduction of Solar Power Generation,” implemented in 2010, was proposed by Mr. Golden and conducted in October 2011. Specialists visited Malawi and held workshops aimed at making renewable energy more widespread.
