Hiyoshiya, based in Kyoto City, is a long-standing business making Kyoto’s Japanese umbrellas, established 150 years ago.
Its fifth generation managing director, Kotaro Nishibori, advocates a company policy that says, “Tradition is the continuation of innovation.” The company is moving forward with applications in a variety of fields through overseas expansion. This mainly involves lighting equipment that utilizes the technology of Kyoto’s traditional umbrellas, and collaboration with designers.
Seminar participants told us they were impressed by its business development, which is the embodiment of its philosophy.
Hiyoshiya is utilizing its previous experience to give support to other SMEs in their overseas expansion. The company’s activities, which it calls “a global venture for a long established company,” are encouraging not just for SMEs in Japan but for those overseas as well.
