Kume textile Industry Co., Ltd. Company visit

Kume Textile Industry Co., Ltd. Kume Textile Industry Co., Ltd. (Sumida Ward, Tokyo)

Chairman Kume is the third generation owner of Kume Textile Industries, a made-in-Japan T-shirt maker with 80 years of history. Kume upholds the concept of the “T-shirt” while expanding his business frontiers. His speech to participants from abroad started with the following comment: “Some people say Japan is no good, because it’s becoming increasingly difficult for small and medium-sized enterprises. Is this true?” According to him, some strategies and enjoyable ways of living are only available to small and medium-sized enterprises managed by owners, precisely due to the nature of their companies.

Chairman Kume’s management practice is not to manage with theory, but with action. What is amazing about the company, and perhaps the reason for its success, is how it puts everything into practice. It considers its strengths, makes what others are not making, keeps manufacturing within the country, hones its sales methods to excellence, participates in international exhibitions, establishes itself firmly with one-of-a-kind products instead of turning to mass-production and mass-retail, develops business opportunities online, makes the best use of business opportunities through organizing events, organizes diverse collaborations, and creates a T-shirt Guild (a group of highly experienced specialists in T-shirts).

I have been involved with PREX’s training courses as a senior course leader for two years, and have been touched by how many small and medium-sized enterprises work very hard and conduct businesses in unique ways. Among those, I was especially amazed by the business management of Kume Industries that solely competes with made-in-Japan T-shirts, which is almost unthinkable in today’s Japan. In addition to participants, I really want our readers to hear Chairman Kume’s speeches and get to know the company.
